Our 1.5 hour Wildlife & Penguin tour offers the most exclusive opportunity to view a variety of wildlife within our private eco-reserve. The reserve is home to New Zealand fur seals, sea lions, hoiho (yellow-eyed penguins), kororā (little penguins), forest birds, seabirds, and much more while contributing to conservation.

Your journey begins in a theatre setting, where you’ll learn about our dedicated conservation work to protect the critically endangered hoiho (Yellow-eyed Penguin), alongside efforts to restore the native flora and fauna. From there, a short bus ride takes you into the heart of the reserve, where you’ll embark on a guided nature walk of approximately 2 kilometres (1.25 miles). Along the way, you never know what you might see—each day offers a unique experience.

Hoiho are the rarest penguin species in the world, with fewer than 500 individuals remaining
on mainland New Zealand—and their population is continuing to decline. While sightings vary throughout the year, your tour includes a visit to our rehabilitation centre (when penguins are in care), offering a rare opportunity to see hoiho and other penguin species up close and learn about the care they receive.
